The FBI and Atlanta police are reportedly bracing for a potentially volatile encounter steeped in political and footballing rivalry<\/strong><\/p>\n

Atlanta is tightening security ahead of Wednesday\u2019s World Cup semifinal between England and Argentina, media outlets report.<\/p>\n

Consultations took place between FIFA, the FBI, and local law enforcement amid concerns that the long-standing rivalry between the two nations could increase the risk of clashes between supporters. Atlanta Police have announced an expanded presence across the city, including around Mercedes-Benz Stadium, team hotels and popular fan gathering areas.<\/p>\n

Officials have also introduced separate stadium entrances and designated fan zones for supporters of each team. While tickets have not been fully segregated, England\u2019s and Argentina\u2019s official allocations of around 8,000 seats each will be located at opposite ends of the stadium. The authorities expect tens of thousands of supporters from both countries to descend on Atlanta for the match.<\/p>\n

The rivalry extends well beyond soccer. Tensions between the UK and Argentina were heightened by the 1982 Falklands War, when the two countries fought a ten-week conflict over the South Atlantic islands, known in Argentina as the Islas Malvinas. Although meetings between the two national teams had long carried considerable weight, the conflict gave subsequent encounters an added political and emotional dimension.<\/p>\n

No match better encapsulates that history than the teams\u2019 quarterfinal at the 1986 World Cup in Mexico. Argentina captain Diego Maradona scored twice in a 2-1 victory, first sending the ball into the net in the infamous \u2018Hand of God\u2019 goal before producing one of the greatest individual strikes in football history, dribbling past five England players and goalkeeper Peter Shilton to score.<\/p>\n

Maradona later said the opener was scored \u201ca little with the head of Maradona and a little with the hand of God.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0His second goal is widely regarded as one of the finest ever scored at the tournament.<\/p>\n

Wednesday\u2019s semifinal also carries added significance because it could be Messi\u2019s final meeting with England on football\u2019s biggest stage. The Argentine captain, who led his country to the 2022 title, is seeking another appearance in the final as he wraps up one of the sport\u2019s greatest careers.<\/p>\n
