href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/ebola\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Ebola<\/a> in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/congo\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Democratic Republic of the Congo<\/a> has arrived in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/germany\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Germany<\/a> for treatment, the health ministry in Berlin said on Monday, weeks after another American infected with Ebola in the DRC was treated in Berlin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Meanwhile, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/trump-administration\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Trump administration<\/a> on Monday said it was blocking American citizens in \u2060the DRC from traveling to the US on commercial flights, Reuters reported, citing a White House official.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">The new American patient landed in Frankfurt overnight and was transferred to the city\u2019s university hospital, according to the German health ministry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">The head of the World <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/society\/health\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Health<\/a> Organization (WHO) said the man was a \u201chumanitarian worker\u201d who had been in Bunia, the capital of the north-eastern Ituri province of the DRC.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Ituri is the center of an Ebola <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/global-development\/2026\/jul\/12\/record-breaking-ebola-treatment-trial-drc\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">outbreak<\/a> that the DRC declared in mid-May \u2013 its 17th.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">The WHO had provided the infected man with \u201cclinical care and close monitoring\u201d, The WHO director-general, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/DrTedros\/status\/2076613415594844346?s=20\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">said<\/a> on X.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"9a5c9d9d-8f09-4e23-8e77-0805c286bb9d\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/germany\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Germany<\/a> for continued follow-up care,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">An official working for the Christian aid group Samaritan\u2019s Purse confirmed to Reuters that the patient, in his 60s, was a full-time employee of the organization working as a warehouse manager in the DRC.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">The DRC\u2019s ongoing outbreak is caused by the Bundibugyo strain of the virus \u2013 for which there is no vaccine or cure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">There have been more than 1,900 confirmed cases in the outbreak and more than 700 confirmed deaths, according to the WHO.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">The German health ministry said the US patient represented \u201cno danger for the general population or for other patients\u201d in the Frankfurt hospital.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cThe risk of someone infected with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/ebola\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Ebola<\/a> entering Germany is very low,\u201d the ministry said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">It added that US authorities had requested help from Germany because of the country\u2019s expertise in treating Ebola cases and the shorter flight time from the DRC to Germany.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Another US patient with the virus was quarantined at the end of May along with his family at Berlin\u2019s Charit\u00e9 hospital.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">He made a recovery after two weeks of treatment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">The Trump administration\u2019s barring Americans in the DRC from traveling to the United States on commercial flights is being done under a transportation authority known as Title 49, according to Reuters\u2019 reporting. That will place US citizens in the DRC or those who have recently left on a \u201cdo-not-board\u201d list until they have spent at least 21 days in a third country, Reuters reported, citing a White House official.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">About two dozen Americans were set to board flights to the United States on Tuesday after having \u200ctraveled to the DRC, according to the US official quoted by Reuters.
