{"id":2168,"date":"2026-07-13T16:01:52","date_gmt":"2026-07-13T16:01:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cnnglobalnews.com\/2026\/07\/13\/us-taking-over-strait-of-hormuz-trump\/"},"modified":"2026-07-13T16:01:52","modified_gmt":"2026-07-13T16:01:52","slug":"us-taking-over-strait-of-hormuz-trump","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cnnglobalnews.com\/?p=2168","title":{"rendered":"US \u2018taking over\u2019 Strait of Hormuz \u2013 Trump"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Washington will be the \u201cguardian angel\u201d of the waterway, and will get paid for it, the US president has claimed<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>US President Donald Trump has claimed that America is <em>\u201ctaking over\u201d<\/em> the Strait of Hormuz from Iran, and will act as the <em>\u201cguardian angel\u201d<\/em> of the key waterway <em>\u201cand get paid for it.\u201d<\/em> Tehran has earlier declared the strait closed, blaming <em>\u201chostile actions\u201d<\/em> by US forces.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking by phone to \u2018Fox &amp; Friends\u2019 on Monday, Trump said Iran was getting its <em>\u201cass kicked\u201d<\/em> in the war against the US, asserting that the country\u2019s navy, air force and missile capabilities had been <em>\u201cvirtually annihilated\u201d<\/em> and listing senior Iranian leaders he said had been killed.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He added that US troops were continuing to carry out strikes against Iranian targets after he declared a ceasefire with Tehran to be <em>\u201cover\u201d<\/em> this past weekend.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWe\u2019re taking over the strait. They\u2019ve got nothing,\u201d<\/em> Trump said, arguing that Washington should have dealt with what he called the Iran threat <em>\u201c47 years ago.\u201d<\/em> He accused successive US presidents of having been <em>\u201ctapped along\u201d<\/em> by Tehran without taking decisive action.<\/p>\n<p>Control of the Strait of Hormuz \u2013 a vital route for global oil and liquefied natural gas shipments \u2013 has emerged as a major flashpoint in the Middle East conflict, which was triggered by a surprise joint US Israeli attack on Iran on February 28 which cost the life of the late Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and several members of his immediate family.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">1\/<br \/>Due to recent hostile actions by the US forces, passage through the <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/hashtag\/Strait_of_Hormuz?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Strait_of_Hormuz<\/a> is currently unfeasible. Hostilities have since resumed as the sides clashed over the interpretation of the MoU and the status of the strait. The US continued striking targets in Iran early on Monday, marking the fourth consecutive night of bombardment.
