The Nordic nation\u2019s parliament supported lifting the long-standing ban earlier this month.<\/p>\n<p>The removal comes three years after Helsinki renounced its decades-long policy of military neutrality and joined NATO. Finland\u2019s accession into the US-led military bloc has led to serious tensions with Russia, with which it shares a 1,340 km border.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe president of the republic approved the proposal,\u201d<\/em> according to the Finnish government website on Friday. It also said the new norms would come into force on July 1. Under the new rules, Finland will be able to import, transit, supply, and store nuclear weapons.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, Finnish Defense Minister Antti Hakkanen argued that the <em>\u201cCold War-era total ban on nuclear explosives\u201d<\/em> was incompatible with the nation\u2019s new role as a member of NATO. The amendments <em>\u201cenable the full utilization of NATO\u2019s nuclear deterrence,\u201d<\/em> he said ahead of the parliamentary vote, while blasting parties opposed to the change as relying on the <em>\u201cerroneous\u201d<\/em> views <em>\u201cof a few so-called peace defenders.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n        <span><strong>Read more<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<figure>\n            <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mf.b37mrtl.ru\/files\/2026.03\/thumbnail\/69aadef72030275fe52e990c.jpg\" alt=\"RT\"><figcaption><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/russia\/634012-kremlin-finland-nuke-warning\/\">Moscow warns new NATO member against hosting nukes<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Stubb, a known Russia hawk, signed the amendments into law just a day after he stated he was <em>\u201crealistically optimistic\u201d<\/em> about the outcome of the Ukraine conflict in an interview with Politico, while still talking about the <em>\u201cstrategic failure\u201d<\/em> of Russia.<\/p>\n<p>Moscow cautioned Helsinki earlier this year against repealing the nuclear ban, with Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov telling reporters that it could <em>\u201clead to an escalation of tensions on the European continent.\u201d<\/em> He added that <em>\u201cby deploying nuclear weapons on its territory, Finland is beginning to threaten us. And if Finland threatens us, we [will] take appropriate measures.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Russia has also described Finland\u2019s decision as <em>\u201cconcentrated confrontation,\u201d<\/em> with Moscow\u2019s embassy in Helsinki warning that even a <em>\u201ctheoretical\u201d<\/em> possibility of nuclear weapons appearing on Finnish soil will be noted by Russian military planners.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, Moscow\u2019s permanent representative at the UN office in Geneva, Gennady Gatilov, warned that Russia would treat nuclear weapons on its borders, whether in Finland or Poland, <em>\u201cas a direct threat warranting compensational countermeasures.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWill it increase the security of the relevant [NATO] nations?
