{"id":2034,"date":"2026-06-26T19:56:05","date_gmt":"2026-06-26T19:56:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cnnglobalnews.com\/2026\/06\/26\/china-backs-economic-corridor-to-bangladesh\/"},"modified":"2026-06-26T19:56:05","modified_gmt":"2026-06-26T19:56:05","slug":"china-backs-economic-corridor-to-bangladesh","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cnnglobalnews.com\/?p=2034","title":{"rendered":"China backs economic corridor to Bangladesh"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Beijing has proposed an initiative which is aimed at boosting regional connectivity<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Beijing has proposed an economic corridor which would link China and Bangladesh as well as Myanmar.<\/p>\n<p>Chinese President Xi Jinping and Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman discussed the regional connectivity project during the latter\u2019s first official visit to Beijing, on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>A Chinese Foreign Ministry <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mfa.gov.cn\/mfa_eng\/xw\/zyxw\/202606\/t20260626_11952992.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">communique<\/a> on Xi\u2019s meeting with Rahman said China <em>\u201cstands ready to work with Bangladesh to carry out high-quality Belt and Road cooperation.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>It added that Beijing is ready to cooperate to <em>\u201cadvance the development of the China-Myanmar-Bangladesh Economic Corridor for greater regional connectivity.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mfa.gov.cn\/mfa_eng\/xw\/zyxw\/202606\/t20260626_11952992.html\"><\/a>Reuters reported that the corridor would connect China\u2019s Yunnan Province with the two countries.<\/p>\n<p><strong><\/strong>Mahdi Amin, spokesperson for the Bangladeshi Prime Minister\u2019s Office, said Xi and Rahman addressed the proposed connectivity project at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tbsnews.net\/foreign-policy\/beijing-proposes-economic-corridor-linking-bangladesh-myanmar-and-china-1472861\"><\/a><em>\u201cPresident Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman discussed connectivity in detail. A proposal was made on how an economic corridor could be developed linking Bangladesh, Myanmar, and China,\u201d<\/em> he said.<\/p>\n<p>The Belt and Road Initiative, launched in 2013 by President Xi, is an infrastructure and economic development program intended to boost connectivity across Asia, Africa, and Europe through investments in railways, ports, highways, and energy projects. In a joint communique issued during Rahman\u2019s visit, China and Bangladesh have vowed to promote high-quality cooperation and work together to realize their goals of modernization.<\/p>\n<p>The two leaders also announced the decision to build a China-Bangladesh <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SpoxCHN_MaoNing\/status\/2070389934775787528\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">community<\/a>, elevating bilateral relations to a higher level.<\/p>\n<p><strong><\/strong>A pact on the China-Bangladesh Mongla Port Economic Zone was also signed, during an Invest Bangladesh seminar in Beijing.<\/p>\n<p>A Bangladesh-China-India-Myanmar Economic Corridor was proposed by China in 2015, as part of the Belt and Road initiative.
