Ghana has arranged flights for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/cy0269pwxg3o\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">several hundreds of its citizens<\/a> to leave South Africa.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cEvery day and almost everyone I meet, they are in fear, extreme fear,\u201d said an Ethiopian entrepreneur who moved to South <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/africa\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Africa<\/a> in 2000 and is married to a local woman. The couple have a 19-year-old daughter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThe sad part is it\u2019s not because they are undocumented \u2026 But none of the legal documents will protect you from the violence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">South Africa has long imported migrant labour, particularly to work in its mines. After his election in 1994 ended white-minority rule, Nelson Mandela welcomed African migrants. The unemployment rate has risen by 3.4 percentage points to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/publications\/P0211\/P02111stQuarter2026.pdf\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">43.1%<\/a> since 2020.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><a href=\"mailto:sharone@lhr.org.za\" data-link-name=\"in body link | mailto:sharone@lhr.org.za\">Sharon Ekambaram<\/a>, who leads the refugee and migrants\u2019 programme at Lawyers for Human Rights, said: \u201cPeople are struggling to hold the government to account and it\u2019s easier to blame the migrants.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">South Africa\u2019s foreign-born population almost trebled to 2.4 million between 1996 and 2022, <a href=\"https:\/\/census.statssa.gov.za\/assets\/documents\/2022\/P03014_Census_2022_Statistical_Release.pdf\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">according to census data<\/a>, which aims to include undocumented people. That represented 3.9% of the 62 million population, up from 2% in 1996.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The March &amp; March leader, Jacinta Ngobese-Zuma, who has campaigned for mass deportation, claims that illegal immigration <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/tFruSleKPzc?si=lyLMErzAIAANyYAI&amp;t=748\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">\u201cranges from 15 million to about 30 million\u201d<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cSouth Africa is currently being invaded. On 30 March, the group led a demonstration in KuGompo City (formerly East London), after local people were angered by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymaverick.co.za\/article\/2026-04-01-explainer-was-an-igbo-king-actually-crowned-in-eastern-cape\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">later-disproven reports<\/a> that a Nigerian had been crowned king. Since then, marches have taken place in cities including Durban, Johannesburg and Pretoria.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Asked how the group was funded, Ngobese-Zuma told local outlet Daily Maverick: \u201cWe get our funding from concerned South Africans, but we also have a social media page where our supporters can contribute. They contribute financially, but some contribute in kind.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymaverick.co.za\/article\/2026-04-29-marching-against-migration-the-rise-of-a-new-populist-player\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Another prominent figure<\/a> in the marches has been Ngizwe Mchunu. The radio DJ was acquitted of charges of instigating riots in July 2021, during which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepresidency.gov.za\/sites\/default\/files\/2022-05\/Report%20of%20the%20Expert%20Panel%20into%20the%20July%202021%20Civil%20Unrest.pdf\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">more than 350 people were killed<\/a> after the former president Jacob Zuma was sent to prison.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In the run-up to local elections in November, some smaller parties, including ActionSA and Jacob Zuma\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeslive.co.za\/politics\/2026-06-04-mk-party-stands-behind-march-and-march-movement-and-immigration-issues\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">uMkhonto we Sizwe (MK)<\/a>, are trying to gain support by associating themselves with the protests.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">African National Congress politicians have tried to tread a finer line. \u201cSouth Africans from every walk of life have raised concerns about migration and illegal immigration \u2026 These concerns are real. They deserve to be heard.
